- DogeOS has launched its public testnet, introducing EVM-compatible smart contracts to the Dogecoin network.
- Developers can now create gaming, trading, stablecoin, and DeFi applications, with transaction fees settled in DOGE.
The Dogecoin ecosystem has expanded with the debut of the DogeOS public Chikyū testnet, which introduces an EVM-compatible smart contract layer powered by a zero-knowledge rollup.
Launched on September 30, the testnet enables developers to design and test applications built around Dogecoin without altering the foundational Layer 1 network. On DogeOS, DOGE serves as the native asset utilized for transaction fees.
This release grants Dogecoin creators entry to Ethereum-compatible smart contract tools. Programmers are able to utilize standard utilities like Foundry, Hardhat, and Remix, with the Chikyū testnet presently running under chain ID 6281971.
DogeOS Brings DeFi and Other Applications to Dogecoin
DogeOS aims to facilitate use cases traditionally absent from the core Dogecoin base layer, such as lending protocols, decentralized exchanges, prediction markets, perpetual trading, stablecoins, and gaming. A handful of initiatives are already active on the testnet environment, featuring USDoge, Split Markets, Derps, Superposition Finance, and Barkswap.
Targeting a throughput of roughly 300 transactions per second—a substantial increase over Dogecoin’s native Layer 1 capacity of about 30 transactions per second—DogeOS operates via a distinct application layer. This lets smart contract functions execute independently of Dogecoin’s core network modifications.
While the zero-knowledge rollup aims to settle its state onto Dogecoin, Dogecoin does not yet independently verify these zero-knowledge proofs. Instead, the testnet relies on a permissioned sequencer, validators, and a trusted execution environment, requiring valid proofs alongside TEE and validator signatures for bridge state transitions.
Previously, DogeOS suggested a Dogecoin Core update enabling the primary network to directly verify ZK proofs, though that upgrade has not yet been adopted.
Consequently, the near-term impact for DOGE centers on applications rather than foundational blockchain alterations. The cryptocurrency functions as the fee token for smart contract operations, offering builders an EVM-friendly ecosystem tailored to Dogecoin.
A specific mainnet release date has not yet been disclosed by DogeOS. The active public testnet serves as a testing ground for creators to experiment and build before any future transition to a mainnet.
CoinMarketCap records from the time of writing indicate that DOGE changed hands around $0.0976 on October 1, marking an increase of approximately 2.5% over the prior 24-hour window.
